First-team coach Alan Sheehan felt the benefits of yet another competitive pre-season workout against Peterborough United on Tuesday evening.

Cauley Woodrow and Harry Cornick scored on the night to extend the Hatters’ winning run to five matches in the lead-up to the new Championship campaign and it provided Nathan Jones with an opportunity to assess a number of players ahead of Saturday’s final friendly.

Speaking post-match, Sheehan shared the positive feeling: "It was a really good competitive game. We had a competitive game against them in the league last season, so we expected nothing less. When you come here you don’t get easy games which is really pleasing for pre-season.”

He highlighted young defender Avan Jones for praise who played an hour at the Weston Homes Stadium, saying: “He equipped himself really well. Sometimes it is tough with young boys coming in with such a competitive squad, it is tough to get minutes because the team is really strong in all areas but I thought Avan can be really pleased with himself.

"He did really well until he cramped up after about an hour, I had a bit of a joke with him but he did really well.”

Matt Macey was in-between the sticks and forced into a number of key saves throughout the 90 minutes, which prompted Sheehan to speak about the strength in the goalkeeping department.

“There is great competition in that area with Ethan (Horvath), Matt Macey and Harry Isted. Three really capable goalkeepers fighting for one spot. Compared to where we were at the end of last season obviously with Sheasy and Jed going down, I think we’re in such a stronger position in the goalkeeper area.”
