He got his first chance to impress at White Hart Lane in January 2011 when he made his Tottenham debut against Charlton in an FA Cup tie – and certainly did that by scoring their opening goal.

Further loans followed, in between regular appearances for Spurs in the Europa League, but he finally got his chance in the Premier League for the first time when he made his league bow for Spurs under Andre Villas-Boas in September 2012.

Following a short but productive loan spell at QPR, the 2013/14 campaign – the season the Town won the Conference title – Townsend established himself in Spurs’ first team, making 25 appearances in the top-flight.

In October 2013 he crowned his England debut by scoring and being named man-of-the-match in the Three Lions’ win over Montenegro.

But after 17 appearances in 2014/15 he fell out of favour  with new Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino and in January 2016 he signed for Newcastle.

However, his time on Tyneside was short-lived and in the summer of 2016, he headed back south and joined Crystal Palace.

Andros nailed down a first team place at Selhurst Park immediately and over the course of three seasons, between 2016 and 2019, he missed just four matches and was an integral part of the Palace attack.

Never shy to get a shot away, his volley against Manchester City in 2018 was named goal of the season – a strike which also made the short-list for the FIFA Puskás Award.

Following five seasons, 185 appearances and 16 goals in all competitions for Palace he joined Everton, where he scored seven times in 27 appearances in 2021/22. The first of those goals, in a win over Burnley, was voted the Goal of the Month for September.

Having left Goodison Park this summer, a move to Burnley broke down – but he trained with the Hatters this past month, and after impressed the coaching staff, he was offered a contract until January.
