Hatters win LMA's Utilita Performance of the Week

Manager Rob Edwards called all of his staff together at the Brache before setting off for Newcastle this afternoon for a special picture to cap a memorable week at Luton Town.

Last Saturday’s injury-time FA Cup fourth round win at Everton was followed by captain Tom Lockyer’s return to the training ground, and then Kenilworth Road, for Tuesday night’s Premier League victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.

That stunning 4-0 win saw the League Managers Association’s panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Chris Hughton, Rachel Yankey, Les Ferdinand, Clare Tomlinson, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, decide that the Utilita Performance of the Week Award should go the Hatters’ way for their performance against the Seagulls.

Edwards said: “Performance of the week is for the whole group. The lads did great, performed really well, but in order for the lads to do well, the staff have to do their jobs and prepare them as best as possible. So much hard work goes into the preparation for just a training session.

“The staff put a lot in so a big thank you to all of them, and of course the lads, because they were the ones who went over the line and did it.

“It’s nice to get recognition for a good performance, but we’ve got to go and replicate it over and over again now.”

It was also a night that new signing Daiki Hashioka received a rapturous welcome from the Kenny faithful when he was introduced to them at half-time, just under an hour after Locks’ emotional lap of the pitch got everyone going ahead of kick-off.

Town were 2-0 up inside two minutes and 20 seconds – the second quickest a side has ever raced into a two-goal lead in Premier League history - thanks to Elijah Adebayo's goal after 19 seconds and Chieo Ogbene's second, with the former going onto complete his first professional hat-trick.

“Locks, Hashi, the performance – topped off by the result; a really special night and one of those that the fans will remember for a long, long time," added Edwards. "It’s nice that we are building a lot of really good memories together at the moment.”
