It was his effort that was deflected goalwards by Luke Berry that finally broke the Millers’ resolve, after they went in front in the first minute of the game.

“You just have to keep believing in this game,” Clark said to BBC Three Counties Radio. “First half I thought we dominated, we had a lot of chances but when it’s not going your way, sometimes you need a little bit of luck and to be fair to them, they defended really well.

“We were a bit sloppy and didn’t have that little bit of quality in the final third to cut them open but you keep going, and sometimes in this ground the fans can suck the ball in the net and I think that is what they did.

“I thought we deserved a point. It was a tough game and fair play to them, I thought they played well second half.”

On Berry’s vital touch, the midfielder said: “He does that a lot. He gets in the right place at the right time and all credit to him because we needed something like that to go our way and I thought with seven minutes added on we would go on and win the game, but it wasn’t to be.

“When you’re losing a game you want to get something out of the game so it was a positive to take before the international break.”

After a rollercoaster start to the season, the 29-year-old is relishing the World Cup break as the Hatters look to regroup and push on ahead of the new year.

“It is great to be playing but eventually it catches up on you. You get little niggles and you play through it but obviously I have been fortunate enough to play pretty much every game. I think a lot of people will be ready for the break and it’ll do them the world of good. Hopefully everyone comes back in one piece!”
