The vastly experienced former player and manager is looking to make his mark alongside fellow assistant Richie Kyle and new boss Rob Edwards, who join the club looking to boost Town’s current league position of 10th.

Speaking to the local press as part of a joint-announcement, Trollope said: “I’m really excited with the challenge ahead. It has been well documented the success the club has had over a relatively short period of time. Similar to Richie, I remember back in 2007/08/09, being in the same league when I was at Bristol Rovers as manager.

“I’ve always had a real respect for the football club. It obviously has top-level pedigree in terms of the past and some fantastic players have been through here. We are aware of the club’s DNA and history and we’re trying to write one of our own now.

The 50-year-old admitted that the chance to reunite with his former Wales team-mate was simply too good to turn down and is relishing the opportunity to get stuck into Championship life once again.

“When you’re between jobs, whether you’re a manager or whether you’re a coach, you look at opportunities as they come along. I reconnected with Rob again recently and as soon as he said there was a possibility of working together, it was something I was very excited about. I’m delighted to join Rob and Richie, they did a fantastic job at Forest Green Rovers, didn’t get the time that they were due at a club down the road so hopefully I can add to the staff, add a bit of value and maybe something a bit different to help us succeed.

“They were different experiences at my last three jobs – Cardiff, Brighton and Nottingham Forest but the league never changes. Sometimes it’s a bit stronger than other years but it’s competitive.

"Anyone can beat anyone on their day, and you have to be right at it every single week. We are here to progress the club, push it forward and we will be doing anything to be really competitive in the league. Give the players a game model that is Rob’s and we want to put in place, and we feel like there is a good basis here to work from and improve.”
