Report | Bedford Town 1-5 Luton Town U21s

Jake Burger and Oli Lynch both bagged a brace for the Development squad as the young Hatters reached the Beds Senior Cup final with victory against Bedford Town at The Eyrie.

Millar Matthews-Lewis also added to the Hatters’ tally for the evening as first-team goalkeeper James Shea got another valuable 90 minutes in the tank.

The hosts were the first to take aim at goal within a minute, Edward Gyamfi’s ambitious left-footed effort from 25-yards flew over Shea’s goal.

Former Hatter Connor Tomlinson, still the youngest player in Luton Town history for his appearance at Gillingham in 2016 aged 15, was unlucky to miss the target after good link-up play on the edge of the box.

It was the Hatters who then opened the scoring, Axel Piesold’s short corner was whipped in by Joe Johnson and Matthews-Lewis guided his header into the bottom corner.

Burger quickly doubled the visitors lead, pouncing on Lynch’s shot which was spilled by Bedford goalkeeper Lewis Elsom.

Bedford were pushing to get themselves back into the game, efforts from Drew Richardson, Rene Howe and Tomlinson were comfortable enough for Shea.

The Hatters found a third just before half-time as Burger whipped in a low cross which found Lynch, who forced the ball past Elsom.

Bedford pulled a goal back straight after the break as Tomlinson sprinted onto Howe’s flick-on and beautifully chipped the ball over Shea.

The young Hatters quickly restored their three-goal cushion as Lynch sprinted down the left and found Burger on the edge of the box, who cooly nutmegged Elsom.

Lynch then picked up another goal of his own, he latched onto Jayden Luker’s through ball and calmly slotted the ball past Elsom to secure their place in the final.

The young Hatters will face Biggleswade FC in the Beds Senior Cup final at Kenilworth Road later this month. Details for that fixture will be released in due course.
