Fred Onyedinma | "We have to keep building"

Fred Onyedinma wants to build on his positive first start of the season and help the team as much as possible whilst staying injury-free this term.

The pacey wing-back dealt with an injury set-back in pre-season with a recurring hamstring problem but after coming off the bench to great effect against Cardiff City, followed by a brief cameo against Wigan, Onyedinma was utilised on the left-hand-side against the Sky Blues.

Once again, it didn’t take long for the 25-year-old to make an impact, as he set-up Carlton Morris’ first goal, albeit he described it as ‘not the best’ assist he has ever produced!

“We started off well and we thought we were going to go on and push. First half for me personally was good but it was disappointing we didn’t capitalise and win so we just have to go again on Saturday.

“We just have to keep building. I feel like the most important thing is that we didn’t lose, we have to still look forward for that first win at home and hopefully we can do that Saturday.”

Time on the sideline was a mental battle for the former Wycombe man, who has rarely dealt with injuries prior to his time at Kenilworth Road.

“It was unfortunate because I did so much work trying to get back fit and it was one of those ones where you do it again and mentally it challenges you because you’re thinking is it going to happen again. The staff helped me, took their time with me just to build me up again and I’m grateful for them as well. I’m happy to be back, hopefully I can keep fit and stay in the team.

“It is an annoying one because I did so much work off season and then it happened again. With football that is what happens. I just have to keep my head down, stick to it and do the work again and then come back stronger.

“With football you never know what happens. I’ve come here and unfortunately, I’ve had a few niggles and I don’t want that to stick. I want to put that behind me and be injury-free, I just want to play and show the best of my ability.”
