The former Manchester United youngster has worked through his youth development and various loan spells to get to the first Premier League start of his career.

“I think it’s a great milestone for me in my career,” said Mengi. “It was a very disappointing game for us, in the first half we’ve got to be honest with ourselves, we know we weren’t up to speed. We know we weren’t playing to our identity, but in the second half we really got it going.

“We didn’t let Burnley have any control whatsoever, we were really knocking on the door. I think we deserved to at least get a point from that game.

“Fair play to them for scoring straight after conceding, but we can’t be disappointed for too long as we have another game coming on Saturday which is a very important one. We’ll recover now and go into the Spurs game with a positive outlook.”

Mengi’s education at Manchester United massively helped him on Tuesday night: “Being in and around it at Manchester United, knowing the speed of the matches and knowing what the level is like has helped me a lot. Now I’ve had that, it’s time for me to go and do the business here.

“Their second goal is tough to take, it’s like someone has stabbed us in the back when we just worked so hard to get to the stage that we got to. That’s football. We need to work to the point where we don’t allow that to happen again and make sure to stay focussed throughout the whole game.

“There’s no time to dwell on this result, we go away and recover, we analyse what we done well and what we can do better before we take it into the next game. We’ve really got to go into that game positive, fresh and ready to go again.”
